ACE-IT I is an adult day service for adults with developmental disabilities with a happy atmosphere that anyone entering our doors will feel. There is not a day at ACE-IT I that I don’t look forward to. Consumers and staff are all smiles and every morning there is enthusiasm and excitement about the day ahead. Our over-sized activity board draws a large crowd in the morning as consumers pick their activities and outings before our morning meeting. I especially enjoy our morning meeting which generally starts with current events, but takes on a life of its own as consumers contribute their thoughts, ideas and feelings. After our meeting consumers get ready to leave for their job and volunteer sites, or for outings to museums, parks, stores and an ever changing list of community experiences. Our in-house activities are also popular including theatre performance classes, independent living skills, art, academics and our new ACE IT I Cooking Academy. Please take a moment to check out our monthly newsletters which describe our many adventures. It is a joy to participate in the successes of the people we serve, and I am forever inspired by what they are able to achieve! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

SELF ADVOCACY AT ACE IT I
On May 8, 2012, Easter Seals ACE IT III came from Yuba City to give us a power point presentation to help empower our People First of California Self Advocacy Group. They brought information on the Lanterman Act and how to advocate with our elected government officials. The Lanterman Act was passed into law in 1969 giving people with developmental disabilities and their families the right to receive services and the support they need.
Clients at ACE IT I have already met Representative Steinberg and are looking forward to our meeting with Representative Pan. We are working on a letter that lets our representatives know our needs regarding supported employment.
ACE-IT I Cooking Academy
On February 23rd, ACE-IT I kicked off their culinary academy with a proper ribbon cutting ceremony, attended by David Edgar, Executive Chef at Serna Bistro. All in attendance had a fabulous time and enjoyed some hors d'oeuvers and sparkling cider.
The academy will be taught in 5 stages, each focusing on a different area of cooking and prep. The training will include field trips, videos, recipe building and general food skills. Each student will recieve a certificate at the end of the sessions/testing and there will be a graduation ceremony to help celebrate at the end!
Arthia is an inspiration to all of us. She is a reminder that our golden years can be filled with meaning and purpose. Arthia's life could be a novel filled with her adventures and action packed travels across the country. Her stories make you laugh until your stomach hurts. We are so blessed to be benefiting from Arthia's gracious and giving spirit. She is dearly loved and appreciated by all of us at ACE IT I.
We recently had an outing to the Shop Smart discount mall south of here, where we met a wonderful, outgoing guy who was really happy to see that we were from Easter Seals! His name is Joseph Gorman, and he was very, very welcoming to our consumers and staff. We got some great bargains from him, and as we got to talking, he told us his story. It turns out that way back in 1979, he had suffered a serious head trauma accident. Starting in 1980, he began receiving services through the HTR Program at Main Center on Hurley. He said that all of the staff there were amazing and treated him with such great kindness, compassion, and professionalism that he is eternally grateful. He wanted to give special thanks to his Speech Therapist, Dorothy (he couldn’t remember her last name). Joe says that Dorothy literally changed his life. He is now happy, independent, and he and his wife Amy are busy running their own successful business booth called Amy’s Toys at Shop Smart. He’s going to try and help us locate some props for our new Performing Arts show!
Thanks, Joe!
OUR HERO!
Rich Monroe, Master Technician with TES-Automotive Repair at 13336 Highway 88 East, Lockeford, California, saved the day when he volunteered his mechanical skills to save the ACE IT I van.
Our van, which we affectionately call “Old Nell”, has provided many years of service transporting consumers to job and volunteer sites. Last month Old Nell experienced a mechanical problem which almost put our faithful steed out to pasture. Unfortunately, after obtaining several repair estimates that exceeded the value of Old Nell, we thought she was a goner. It was a tough time for all of us.
Rich heard of our plight through his wife, ACE IT I employee Michelle Milton-Monroe. He all but said “Here I am to save the day” when he volunteered to fix Old Nell and return her to a productive life with her loyal companions at ACE IT I.
And fix her he did! We are happy to report Old Nell is back in service transporting consumers to their jobs and volunteer locations. Thank you, Rich, for your concern, your hard work, and for volunteering your valuable time to help us in our time of need. You are our hero!
